Periodontal Care

Healthy gums are the foundation – quite literally – for healthy teeth and good oral health overall. That’s why periodontal care is such an important part of the dental services that we provide to our patients from throughout the San Antonio, Texas area. Gum disease is no laughing matter. Left untreated, you could lose your teeth. But periodontal disease has also been linked with other much more serious health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Williamson and his trained staff of oral health professionals offer a variety of periodontal care services to ensure that our patients enjoy good oral health throughout their lives.

The Role that Professional Cleanings Play in Periodontal Care

Most of us know that having our teeth cleaned involves the dental hygienist removing tartar and plaque buildup from our teeth. But what you may not know is how that same buildup can develop into gum disease when it occurs below the gum line and is left untreated. No matter how hard you may try to remove plaque and tartar on your own, you’ll never be able to do it yourself. That’s why it’s so important to visit our office regularly for professional cleanings. Not only are your teeth benefitting – your gums are as well.

Services We Offer for Our Patients with Gum Disease

If you already have gum disease, you’re not alone! In fact, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) estimates that over 45% of adults in the US suffer from some stage of periodontal disease. Fortunately, there are several procedures that can effectively treat this condition. If you’re still in the early stages of gum disease, Dr. Williamson may recommend a deep cleaning in order to remove plaque and tartar below the gum line. Some people may require root planing, a procedure in which Dr. Williamson smooths the roots of the teeth to completely eliminate any bacteria that might exist there.

Of course, the best way to treat gum disease is to avoid getting it to begin with, so Dr. Williamson encourages his patients to schedule professional cleanings and exams at least once a year. If you have a history of gum disease, or are more prone to developing it, you may need to come in more often.
