It is always better to prevent cavities from forming than to fix them after they have already developed. Therefore, we believe it is important to share the latest preventative dental guidelines from the American Dental Association (ADA) with you and your family. Brush Your Teeth at Least Twice Per Day With the Right Toothpaste

First, you need to make sure that you brush your teeth at least twice per day. This is probably a habit that you developed as a child, and you need to follow this habit as an adult. Get in a habit of brushing your teeth at least twice per day. For example, you may want to brush your teeth as soon as you get up in the morning. 

Or, you might want to brush your teeth after breakfast before you head out the door for school or work. Then, make sure you brush your teeth in the evening as well. After you brush your teeth, you should not have anything else to eat before you go to bed. It won’t do you any good to brush your teeth and then eat a bunch of cookies before you finally fall asleep.

Furthermore, you need to make sure you brush your teeth with the right toothpaste. Ideally, you should use toothpaste that has fluoride in it. While most toothpaste has fluoride in it, check the package to make sure. Fluoride is important for reinforcing the enamel of your teeth, which can make them resistant to cavities.

Clean In Between Your Teeth Daily

In addition to brushing your teeth twice per day, you need to floss your teeth every day as well. While the bristles on toothbrushes are effective, they are not necessarily going to get in between your teeth. This is where food debris likes to hide, and you need to get rid of it before bacteria can break it down. When bacteria digest leftover food debris, they release acid as a byproduct. Then, this acid can degrade your enamel and lead to cavities.

To get rid of the food stuck in between your teeth, make sure you floss your teeth every day. A few tips to follow include:

  • Get your fingers wet and wrap the floss around your middle fingers.
  • Use your index fingers to force the floss in between each set of teeth.
  • Make sure you move the floss in between the cracks twice. You need to get the floss around each tooth, so you need to floss each crevice at least two times.
  • If you have braces or children, you might be looking for a non-traditional flossing option that is easier to use. Consider using a “flosser” that doesn’t require you to wrap your fingers around dental floss.


This is ideal for children. Or, you might be looking for reinforced floss with a thick end that is convenient for people with braces.

Eat a Healthy Diet That Limits Sugary Beverages

Next, make sure you eat a healthy diet that limits sugary beverages. It is impossible to stay away from all sugar, as this is important for your daily diet as well; however, sugar can lead to cavities because bacteria like to digest it. Therefore, try to limit your intake of sugary beverages. This includes fruit juice, sports drinks, and soda. All of these drinks have a tremendous amount of sugar and could lead to cavities. Furthermore, dark drinks could lead to stains.  Instead, try to drink more water. You should also try to find foods and drinks that have a bit of extra calcium in them. This calcium is important for the health of your teeth as well.

Visit Your Dentist At Least Twice Per Year for the Prevention of Serious Dental Issues

Finally, do not forget to go to the dentist at least twice per year for regular checkups. That is where we come in. At Mark J.
