Root Canals

It’s fair to say that root canals have gotten a “bad rap” over the past several years. But the fact is that root canals are often an excellent way to save a tooth that might otherwise be lost. Not every dentist performs root canals, and only those with an adequate amount of training and expertise offer root canals as one of their dental services. Fortunately, Dr. Williamson is one of those dentists. With extensive experience in performing root canals, you can rest assured that the process will be completed in a relatively short period of time and that you’ll feel little or no discomfort whatsoever during the process. Dr. Williamson is pleased to offer root canals as one of the many services he provides to his patients from throughout the San Antonio, Texas area.
When Are Root Canals Necessary?
In some instances, a patient can develop an infection in a tooth. If that infection spreads to the pulp portion of the tooth, a root canal is often the only way to get rid of the infection and, in the process, save the tooth from having to be pulled. The procedure involves removing both the pulp and the nerves from the affected tooth, then sealing it off (sometimes with a crown) for an added measure of protection. Although the process may sound painful, it’s really not. In fact, Dr. Williamson is careful to use an adequate amount of anesthetic and dental sedation to ensure that the patient feels no pain during the procedure and remains relaxed and at ease.
Indications that You May Need a Root Canal
While a root canal itself is virtually painless, the same cannot be said for the symptoms of needing one. In fact, having any kind of infection is usually very uncomfortable and having an infected tooth is no different. Here are some indications that you may need a root canal:
- An extremely bad toothache that gets more intense when you bite down on the tooth
- Painful, swollen, and/or red gum tissue around a tooth
- A tooth that turns dark in color
- A sore on gum tissue next to a tooth
- Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold beverages and foods
