Dentures in San Antonio, TX | Dr. Mark J. Williamson

Dentures are not exactly a new invention. In fact, dentures (in one form or another) have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. Of course, some of those appliances were pretty crude. Fortunately, modern dental patients have the advantage of the last several decades of advancements in dental technology. Today’s dentures are not only natural-looking and durable; they’re also much more comfortable and well-fitting than dentures of years ago. And for our patients from the San Antonio, Texas area who are either already missing their teeth or need to have their teeth removed for whatever reason, dentures can vastly improve their quality of life overall.

Types of Dentures Available

Most of us know that, generally speaking, dentures come in two categories: partials for people who are just missing a few teeth, and complete sets that include both a top and bottom plate for people who are missing all of their teeth. But what you may not know is that there are two types of full sets of dentures available to patients:

  • Conventional dentures are intended for people who have already lost their teeth. These appliances are fitted onto fully healed gums.
  • Immediate dentures are available for patients who need to have their teeth removed and don’t want to live without teeth for several weeks afterwards while their gums heal. Immediate dentures are fitted onto gum tissue that has not yet healed. They are usually considered to be a temporary solution until the patients’ gums heal and they’re able to wear conventional dentures

While it’s true that modern dentures fit much better than earlier versions, some patients still experience a certain amount of slippage with their conventional dentures. But dental technology provides a solution for that: implant-supported dentures. These appliances attach onto several dental implants that have been strategically placed throughout the patient’s mouth. Implant-supported dentures fit snugly in place, with very little or no slippage whatsoever. This eliminates the need for denture adhesive to hold the appliance in place.
