The foundation for healthy teeth and gums involves maintaining a good daily oral hygiene routine at home and regular trips to the dentist for oral exams and professional cleanings. Dr. Williamson knows exactly how important those regular trips to our office are, which is why our staff includes personable, caring, gentle and high experienced dental hygienists – dental professionals who provide our San Antonio, Texas patients with a variety of proven services and unparalleled patient care in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Here are some of the prevention services that are routinely performed by our highly trained dental hygienists:
Removal of Calculus (Tartar) and Plaque
Having your teeth professionally cleaned by a dental hygienist is absolutely essential. No matter how diligent you are when it comes to your at-home oral hygiene routine, you’ll never be able to remove all the calculus and plaque that builds up on teeth over time. Calculus is the hardened deposits that form both above and below the gum line and can only be removed with specially designed dental instruments. Plaque develops on the surface of teeth when bacteria, saliva and leftover food particles form a sticky biofilm deposit.
Diagnostic Radiographs (X-Rays)
For many years, hygienists have used X-rays to detect problems that may not be obvious during a visual exam. But some patients were concerned about being exposed to radiation, which is why we utilize digital radiographs rather than traditional X-rays. These diagnostic radiographs are faster, more comfortable for the patient, and produce a much lower dose of radiation.
Voice Activated Periodontal Probing
Periodontal probing has long been performed by hygienists as a means of checking for signs of gum disease. This procedure involves measuring the depths of gum pockets that form around each tooth, and monitoring those measurements for indications of gum inflammation or recession.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can be a very treatable condition, but only if it’s caught in the early stages. That’s why our hygienists and Dr. Williamson perform regular checks for oral cancer, which involves looking for lumps, swelling, discoloration, ulcerations or other abnormalities.
Topical Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is effective in strengthening teeth and preventing cavities. Our hygienists may recommend a fluoride rinse or varnish for some patients during their regular cleaning visits.
Epic Soft Tissue Laser and Maintenance
Periodontal disease is no laughing matter. In fact, it can lead to tooth loss and has even been associated with other more serious illnesses. Fortunately, our dental hygienists are trained in use of the Epic Laser, which can be used in conjunction with other conventional treatment methods to reduce gum inflammation inside periodontal pockets.
